Fascia and Somatic Stretching and Movement
Short video introducing the fascinating developments in fascia and movement research
Fascia Stretching and Movement
Elastic and plastic fascia movement and stretching refer to two different properties of fascia tissue and how they respond to movement and stretching.
Elastic fascia can stretch and return to its original shape, similar to a rubber band, while plastic fascia can be reshaped and elongated over time with consistent stretching. Engaging in movement and stretching activities that target the fascia can offer numerous benefits.
Elastic fascia movement and stretching helps improve flexibility, mobility and range of motion by releasing tension and promoting elasticity in the connective tissue. This can enhance athletic performance, reduce the risk of injury, and alleviate stiffness and discomfort. On the other hand, plastic fascia stretching allows for long-term changes in the structure of the fascia, leading to improved posture, reduced muscle imbalances and enhanced overall body alignment.
By incorporating both elastic and plastic fascia movement and stretching into a regular routine, individuals can optimize their physical health, promote tissue resilience, and support overall well-being.
Somatic Stretching and Movement
In the context of movement and therapy, “somatic” often describes approaches that focus on integrating the mind and body to promote healing and self-awareness, such as somatic experiencing or somatic movement therapy. Combining gentle, sustained stretches with mindfulness and breath awareness can help provide somatic release.
Unlike more dynamic exercise, focusing on holding passive stretches for a prolonged duration allows practitioners to access deeper layers of connective tissue, including the fascia, and release tension held within the body. By holding these positions in a relaxed state and surrendering to gravity, individuals can cultivate a sense of surrender and acceptance, which can promote emotional release and stress reduction.
Additionally, the emphasis on mindfulness and breath awareness encourages practitioners to observe and explore sensations in their bodies, fostering a deeper connection between the mind and body. Overall, it can serve as a powerful somatic practice that promotes relaxation, emotional healing, and overall well-being.
